MITM’s Interview Questions Did Not Jive w/Mr. Rick
1. When and why did you start playing music?
Ry: I started playing when I was about 10 years old. My Dad got a keyboard for Christmas one year. I used to mess about on it, trying to play the theme tunes of my favorite TV shows by ear. I got into recording in my twenties. I bought a cheap reconditioned laptop off eBay, a midi keyboard, and a Mackie Spike, best 300 quid I ever spent.
2. Which instruments do you play?
Ry: Keyboard/Synth. Although, I would say the laptop is my musical instrument these days.
3. Is your family musical?
Ry: My Dad has always had a very diverse taste in music. It was because of him that I got into making ‘electronica’ in the first place. I can remember him letting me stay up late whilst my Mum was at work so we could listen to loads of his records. He introduced me to some amazing artists when I was a kid.
4. What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighborhood or town?
Ry: One of my fav’s was when I went to see Amon Tobin with a few friends back in 2002 in Manchester, mid-week. We stopped out ’til 4 am. I was in work at 7 that morning. Longest day ever!, but it was well worth it!.
5. Who are your favorite musicians? Groups? CD’s?
Ry: It changes all the time, but I’d say right now I’m really into Lone, Patten, Letherette, Teebs and The Avalanches to name a few.
6. How do you balance your music with other obligations – mate, children, job?
Ry: I just make time – it helps that my wife is also very very patient!. Who know’s maybe one-day music will be my job!
